Putting on the Roof - 9/14/08
The crew consisted of Jonathan, Jeff, and John. They were wise
to keep working through the weekend, because on Sunday they were
blessed to have what was absolutely the least amount of wind of any day all
summer long. Typically the trade winds are blowing a steady
20 MPH or more which would make this job treacherous. But instead, it was a
light 0-5 mph out of the southwest, and it was the first
day I ever smelled any vog since I moved to the neighborhood in May.

The steam plume from where the lava meets the ocean was almost coming toward
us, but fortuneately not quite reaching us.
Consequently, the lava viewing area was closed all weekend due to the toxic
gases being blown into it.
